WHO IS ELIGIBLE:  

  • Automobile Dealers: new, used, motorcycle
  • Must have valid unexpired motor vehicle dealer’s license
  • Heavy Duty Truck Dealers
  • Dealer Vehicle Prep
  • Manufacturers or Transporters
  • Non-Profit Special Purpose - Public Chapter 902 (2016) authorized a nonprofit organization to obtain a special purpose license plate (Special Event Plate - class 1121) , in lieu of registering the vehicle, for the following purposes: to transport the vehicle between a prior or subsequent owner and the organization; to transport the vehicle between the organization and a location where cleaning, repairing, or preparation is performed; or to test the vehicle within a 20-mile radius of the location where the cleaning, repairing, or preparation is performed. The bill imposes a fee of $47.30 for the first plate and $23.65 for each additional plate. It limits a nonprofit organization to a maximum of three plates each year.

NOTES:

  • Beginning May, 2022. Dealer plates will be renewed every May instead of new metal being issued. Dealer Plates can be renewed up to 90 days in advance as well. 
  • These plates are not issued to individual vehicles
  • Fees vary by class code, however a higher fee is assessed for the first plate purchased; additional plates may be purchased at a reduced fee
  • The number an applicant may purchase varies and is dependent on information provided by the Motor Vehicle Commission, however, there is a maximum number of plates that can be purchased annually.
  • Class Codes 1110, 1112, and 5050 - max 225 plates

  • Please note, a new dealer may be issued three plates.  For the second year, they are allotted three plates only after filing their annual sales report AND it reflects sales of up to 24 vehicles.  If they sell more than 24 they may purchase up to 225 dealer plates.  
  • RV dealership license numbers should be keyed into system as RV52 on the Dealer App.

Application for Dealer Plates

REPLACEMENT DEALER PLATES:

  • Lost/Stolen Plates:  The fee to replace lost plates is the same rate as provided for obtaining the plate initially issued. The Application for Duplicate/Replacement License Plate or Decal must be completed in its entirety, including certification that the loss/theft has been reported to law enforcement.
  • Mutilated/Defaced Plates: The fee to replace a mutilated or defaced plate is $10 if the mutilated plate is surrendered to the clerk.
