Precious Cargo Designation on a Tennessee Registration

AUTHORITY: 

Tenn. Code Ann. §§ 55-21-303

DESCRIPTION:

An owner or lessee of a motor vehicle who needs assistance with expressive language, communicating needs to a first responder, or who needs assistance with exiting a motor vehicle may request that the department include such designation in the VTRS database.  This information will be available to law enforcement through VTRS.

WHAT THE CLERK SHOULD DO:

At the time of initial registration or renewal: When performing the registration/renewal transaction, if proper documentation is presented, you will see that the current dropdown in TNClerk has been replaced with a checkbox window that allows clerk's to make multiple selections on the owner screen. You will make your selections and scan in the supporting documentation.

Outside of the renewal period: Verify that proper documentation is presented and perform a 17 transaction. Follow the same steps in TNClerk listed above and scan the supporting documents.

NOTE:

• The applicant must be listed as the owner/co-owner or lessee of the vehicle. 
• The "Precious Cargo" designation must be made through the office of the county clerk in the county of the applicant's residence.
