WHO IS ELIGIBLE:
- Private and commercial motor vehicles operating for hire who transport
passengers. - A school bus owned by a private contractor and operated under contract with the county to provide transportation to students attending county schools should be registered with a Commercial Bus plate, with the fee depending on the vehicle’s seating capacity. See Attorney Generals Opinion 15-53.
- The Bus C Plate requires the applicant to submit an affidavit confirming the route
mileage and seating capacity of any vehicle registering under this provision. In
addition to the base registration, the applicant must also pay a per seat fee and
there is a minimum, click on the class code and fee schedule below for more
information. - Bus A-Apportioned plate, Class Code 4502, is issued through the Department of
Revenue Motor Carrier Section.
NOTES:
- The Department takes the position that a “seat” is the physical seat (i.e. the bench on a school bus, regardless of the number of passengers it seats).
- Buses that are not used in a trade or business shall be subject to the registration fee set out in 55-4-111(a)(1), Class (B). See TCA 55-4-112(c). EXAMPLE: non-profits (Boys & Girls Club), churches.
